Feline Pheromones

Feliway is a feline or cat pheromone, a chemical communicator. This pheromone is naturally produced by cats and the mother cat to her kittens, it aids cats in feeling relaxed, calm, safe, and happy.

Feliway Helps with Calming Your Cat

Feliway offers various formulas for their diffusers that help with different behavior issues including scratching, fighting, anxiety, stressful events, urinating outside the litter box or spraying. If your cat is urinating outside of the litter box, make sure to have it checked out by a veterinarian first as this can be a medical issue that can include urinary tract infection (UTI), crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Cats release pheromones when they rub their face, scratch, claw at objects, bump heads with other cats or you, rub their bodies on surfaces, and/or spray to mark territory.

Diffusers

Diffusers are convenient for plugging in, releasing pheromones into the environment and providing a calming feeling for up to 30 days in a 700-square-foot area. It is best to plug the diffuser in the room where the cat spends most of its time, where there is stress for the cat, or where conflict with other cats occurs in the house.

Diffuser Usage

When purchasing a diffuser, it includes a 30-day supply of Feliway to be changed every 30 days and the diffuser itself should be changed every six months if continuously plugged in. There should be a 4-foot open space around the diffuser to make sure it gets into the air and the cat gets the benefits from the pheromones. You can buy refills separately from the diffusers.

Feliway Help Diffusers

Feliway Help Diffusers are best for short periods, trying out the product to see if it will help your cat, or for brief stressful events such as you being away from your cat for a period, renovations to your house or construction nearby, traveling with your cat, or having company over and you know it stresses your cat out or your cat hides when other people are in the house.

Feliway Multi-Cat Diffuser

Another product line Feliway has is the multi-cat diffuser. This diffuser is designed for reducing common signs of tension and conflict among multiple cats such as fighting, chasing, and blocking others in the house from doing what they want. This diffuser is best placed where most conflicts occur.

Most Cats

While Feliway generally helps with stress and anxiety in most cats, it may not be effective for all. Trying it is the only way to know if it will benefit your cat.

In the Clinic

In veterinary clinics where I have worked, we often sprayed towels or cages for most cats, and it helped to reduce stress in most of them. Some patients required frequent respraying but if it helped them to be calmer and less stressed, we were happy to respray it.
